Floods batter Japan's carmakers

MANUFACTURING disruptions caused by flooding in Thailand are continuing to take their toll on Japanese automakers.

Honda yesterday said it is still unclear when its flooded Thai plant, that has an annual capacity of 240,000 vehicles, can restart production. The company said production reductions will continue in Japan, North America and Europe, as well as Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Spokesman Tomohiro Okada said production in Vietnam, India and Pakistan, so far unaffected, will probably have to be reduced due to shortages of parts.

Toyota said stoppages it had previously projected as lasting through today will continue to November 12, costing the company 69,000 vehicles in lost production in Thailand, and 22,000 in Japan.

Nissan said supply shortages will result in lost production of 40,000 vehicles in Thailand. There is also a risk of a production loss of 20,000 vehicles in Japan, it said.

The automakers had already been battered by parts shortages caused by the tsunami in northeast Japan in March when problems emerged from the flooding in Thailand.
