Weather and buying curbs dent car sales

PASSENGER car sales reversed 6.1 percent in China in July from the previous month due to weather conditions and new curbs on car purchases.

In July, car makers sold 957,724 vehicles, an increase of 3.6 percent year on year. Sales are expected to rebound in the coming months, the China Passenger Car Association said yesterday.

"The month-on-month decrease was in line with our expectations, mainly because of the hot weather and a new car restriction policy in Guiyang," said Rao Da, secretary-general of the association.

On July 11, Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province, imposed a new policy to restrict car purchases, for traffic and environment reasons.

Last month, sales of sedans gained 6.6 percent on an annual basis while those of multi-purpose vehicles rose 11.5 percent, and sport-utility vehicles jumped 15.2 percent.

Minivans, however, were the only segment to report a drop in sales which declined 19.1 percent from a year earlier in July.
