Cabot to cut pollutants at city facility
CABOT Corp, a US carbon black producer, yesterday said it will invest 16 million yuan (US$2.58 million) in new pollutant removal systems at its Shanghai facility to meet the Chinese government’s more stringent environmental standards.
The move to eradicate sulfur and nitrogen oxides is part of the company’s global campaign to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
The company had previously spent US$20 million in 2011 to modify the energy and emission facilities at the Shanghai plant. It currently produces 170,000 tons of carbon black every year.
Carbon black is widely used as a reinforcing filler in tires and other rubber products. It is also used a color pigment in plastics, paints and inks.
China last year deepened its commitment to protect the environment as it vowed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and raise the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy use to 20 percent by then.
