Demand for junior staff as retailers expand

DEMAND for entry-level staff like sales clerk and cashier led to a strong hiring demand as Chinese retailers expanded fast.
More than 64 percent retailers said they hoped to employ graduates from vocational schools, according to a joint survey by China Chain Store & Franchise Association and Wal-Mart China.
At the same time, 96 percent of retailers said they were willing to collaborate with vocational schools and offer trainee or internship positions to students.
Demand for vocational school graduates are the highest, accounting for 74 percent of the job opportunities, showed the survey, which interviewed 151 domestic retailers including foreign and domestic department stores, hypermarkets and convenience stores.
Wal-Mart last month kicked off a training program with the association and will spend 5 million yuan (US$814,000) in the next three years to train up to 20,000 vocational school graduates to meet the demand for entry-level staff for retailers.
Guo Geping, the association’s chairman, said there is a lack of systematic and standard training program for junior staff in the industry.
