Panasonic will close plasma TV plant in Shanghai

JAPAN-BASED Panasonic Corp will close its Shanghai plasma TV plant by the end of this year because booming sales of LCD televisions have eroded demand, media reported today.
The production capacity will be moved to a plant in Shandong Province, Kyodo News reported yesterday.
Panasonic China was not immediately available to comment.
Globally, LCD has become the mainstream technology for large-screen TVs, replacing traditional and plasma televisions, research firms said.
Sales of plasma TV panels dropped 24 percent annually last year to 13 million units globally.
Sales are expected to be less than 3 million by 2015, according to DisplaySearch, a US-based IT consulting firm.
Meanwhile, LCD televisions have 88 percent of the global TV market and this is expected to hit 90 percent this year.
During the latest CES show in the US, television makers such as Sony, Samsung and LG launched new products with LCD panels, with higher definition or larger screens.
Panasonic also launched new LCD TVs during the show.
