Wal-Mart to invest more on food safety

US retailer Wal-Mart Inc said yesterday that it will increase its investment on food safety in China to 300 million yuan (US$48.8 million) from 2013 to 2015.
Last year, the retailer said it would spend 100 million yuan in the three-year period.
The retailer will also double the frequency of testing on DNA of its meat products, besides enhancing inspection of suppliers and introducing other testing measures.
Last year, the US retailer recalled donkey meat sold at some outlets in China after Chinese food safety watchdog said it contained fox meat.
Wal-Mart, which plans to open 110 new stores in China in the next few years, opened two mobile safety laboratories in Guangdong Province last year. The retailer also plans to open the labs in east China in the near future.
It will also impose stricter inspection on its suppliers.
