Chinese government to discuss economic issues tomorrow

CHINA'S State Council, or the Cabinet, is set to discuss the country's economic growth direction for the second half of this year during a regular meeting to be held tomorrow, the National Business Daily reported today.

The nation's top leaders will also meet at Beidaihe resort area in Hebei Province late this month to set the tone for macroeconomic measures during the July-December period, the newspaper said.

The top priority for the government in the second half is to battle inflation while sustaining economic growth, which needs careful policy planning, the newspaper said, citing industry analysts.

China's inflation rate grew at the fastest pace in three years in June, higher than previous expectation amid an already slowing economy.

The Consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, climbed 6.4 percent from a year earlier in June. It was a sharp jump over May's 5.5 percent as costs of food rocketed 14.4 percent, up from 11.7 percent a month earlier.

Pork prices even gained an annualized 57.1 percent last month.
