Optimism rise among mainland businesses, survey finds

MORE Chinese mainland businesses may expand production next year as their expectations for domestic economic growth improved, a survey showed today.
Respondents who said they are optimistic about the Chinese economy outpaced pessimists by 19 percentage points in the fourth quarter last year, higher than the reading of 11 percentage points in the third quarter but still lagging the year's high of 33 percent in the second quarter, accounting firm Grant Thornton said in a survey today.
Indices tracking businesses that intend to invest in factories, machines, and research and development in the upcoming 12 months jumped 10 percentage points from the third quarter, the survey said.
"A series of economic data show the domestic economy is recovering, and the government's plans to double individual income will boost consumption and increase GDP growth," said Xu Hua, leading partner of Grant Thornton China.
The survey covering 3,200 businesses worldwide revealed global business optimism was 4 percent in the fourth quarter, mainly pared by a pessimistic US economic outlook for 2013.
