Shanghai, Beijing slowest in economic growth among provinces and cities

SHANGHAI and Beijing remained the slowest in terms of economic growth in the first three quarters among China's provinces and municipalities that have released their key economic data for the period.

Gross domestic product of both Shanghai and Beijing expanded 7.7 percent from a year earlier in the first nine months, according to local statistics bureaus.

That rate put them at the bottom of growth rates among China's 25 provinces and municipalities which have released the data.

Tianjin, a municipality in northeast China, topped the list with a growth rate of 12.6 percent for the period. It was followed by Chongqing in central China whose economy expanded 12.4 percent.

However, Shanghai and Beijing's growth rate, though the slowest, was the same as China's economic growth as calculated by the National Bureau of Statistics, which was also at 7.7 percent.

A report by China News Service said it also found the aggregate economic output of the 25 provinces and municipalities has already surpassed the reported national output by 1.3 trillion yuan (US$214 billion).

According to the national statistics bureau, China's economic output landed at 38.6 trillion yuan in the first nine months, while the calculated output of 25 provinces and municipalities has already amounted to 39.9 trillion yuan.

Zhao Xijun, deputy dean of School of Finance at Renmin University of China, said the contradictory data are a result of overlapping calculations, and it is a lasting problem in China.
