China's coal imports to rise
CHINA will increase coal imports from Russia by 30 percent as part of efforts to boost energy ties between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.
Russia will supply 15 million tons of coal annually to China over the next five years, and that may rise to 20 million tons annually in the future as transport infrastructure improves, the foreign ministry said in a statement on its website.
Russia exported 11.6 million tons of coal to China in 2010, according to Bloomberg News calculations based on customs data. China's largest coal producer, Shenhua Group, has also made "new progress" with its Russian partners on joint ventures to develop coal fields and coal liquefaction projects, the ministry said.
The ministry issued its statement following a new round of the Sino-Russian energy negotiators' meeting between Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin in Moscow on Tuesday.
Russia is seeking to diversify more of its energy exports from its traditional European market to China, with a pending gas supply contract being one most notable deal.
The two countries hope to finalize the terms of the key gas contract by June 10, the foreign ministry said. That may allow President Hu Jintao to sign the deal during his visit to Russia later this month.
China National Petroleum Corp and Russia's gas export monopoly Gazprom signed a framework deal in 2009 which could see 68 billion cubic meters of Russian gas shipped to China annually via two pipelines over 30 years. But the two nations have been divided on pricing, although Liu Tienan, head of China's National Energy Administration, said in Moscow on Tuesday that "one little step" remains on pricing.
