Bank jobs attractive despite lagging salaries

JOBS in banking are strongly sought-after in Shanghai, although they rank only fifth in terms of salaries, according to a survey yesterday by an online recruitment company.

A single vacancy in the banking sector attracts an average of 113.6 job seekers every day in Shanghai, followed by environment protection jobs with an average of 77.8 applicants, according to the Zhaopin.com survey, which covered positions posted on the website in the past month.

But the average monthly salary of 8,045 yuan (US$1,302) for bank staff lags behind jobs such as auditing, legal consulting and human resources,  which offer an average monthly wage of 11,927 yuan.

The survey didn’t say why bank jobs are so popular in spite of better salaries being available elsewhere.

Sales work needs the most professionals in Shanghai, while real estate and construction are the biggest recruiters, the report also found.

The website last week said white collar jobs in Shanghai offer an average monthly salary of 7,214 yuan, the highest among 28 major cities in China.
