Chinese dominate female wealth list
China, which boasts the most number of self-made female billionaires in the world, is home to the three richest women entrepreneurs this year, according to a study published yesterday to celebrate the upcoming International Women’s Day.
The Hurun Research Institute’s latest ranking of the richest self-made women counts 19 Chinese women on the list. The list includes a record high of 45 individuals from nine countries and regions, each holding over US$1 billion in personal assets as of January 17. The US has 16 women on the list while the UK accounts for four females.
“China, the US and the UK are leading the world when it comes to gender equality in business,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report.
Holding 36.5 billion yuan (US$6 billion), real estate tycoon Chen Lihua, 73, of Fu Wah International, is the richest self-made woman in the world. She is followed by Zhang Yin, 57, of Nine Dragons Paper with 30.5 billion yuan, and Wu Yajun, 50, of Longfor Properties with 27.5 billion yuan. All are from the Chinese mainland.
The list only counts four people involved in real estate because retail and information technology have now become the biggest sources of wealth, accounting for 24 percent and 18 percent in the self-made women billionaires’ club.
