4G, broadband鈥檚 success propels IT industry
CHINA’S information consumption grew 20 percent in the first half, thanks to the popularity of 4G phones and improved broadband speed, the industry regulator said yesterday.
Home entertainment, mobile Internet and cloud computing will become the revenue engine in China, which has set developing IT consumption as a national strategy, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
In the first six months, China’s IT consumption reached 1.34 trillion yuan (US$216.1 billion), thanks to upgraded IT infrastructure, growing 4G and broadband users, Zhang Feng, the ministry’s spokesperson, said during a Web-broadcast conference yesterday.
China’s 4G user base reached 14 million by the end of June since the country’s biggest carrier China Mobile launched the service at the end of last year. Rivals China Unicom and China Telecom launched 4G services later. The mobile data traffic jumped 52 percent year-on-year while its income increased 46 percent in the same period.
“Broadband and 4G were the leaders in Chinese IT consumption. They are still growing on a fast track,” Zhang said.
China’s broadband user reached 198 million by the end of June with improved network speed. It now aims to improve average broadband bandwidth to 20 megabytes per second in 2015 compared with 4 Mbps now, the ministry added.
China has great potential on IT consumption in many sectors including cloud computing, home entertainment and 4G, analysts said.
The Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, spent US$7.5 billion on public cloud services and technologies, a surge of 50 percent. It will create 4 million new jobs in China by 2015, US-based research firm International Data Corp said.
China Telecom said yesterday it would start selling Microsoft Corp’s Xbox One game console starting from September.
China’s home entertainment market is looking forward to a new policy that would allow foreign firms to register in Shanghai’s Free Trade Zone to sell game consoles.
