Saturated market hit smartphone sales
CHINA’S smartphone sales dropped annually in the first quarter to post their first decline in the six years due to a saturated market, US-based research firm IDC said yesterday.
Apple snared the No. 1 position in the first three months because of the popularity of the large-screen iPhone 6, according to International Data Corp.
From January to March, China’s smartphone sales were 98.8 million units, down 4.3 percent from a year ago, IDC said.
“Smartphones are becoming increasingly saturated in China,” Kitty Fok, managing director at IDC China, said in a statement.
In the first quarter, Apple sold 14.5 million iPhones in the domestic market, a surge of 62.1 percent growth annually.
Samusng sales tumbled 53 percent in China to drag the former market leader to No. 4 in the market, according to IDC.
Apple took 14.5 percent market share, followed by Xiaomi’s 13.5 percent, Huawei’s 11.2 percent and Samsung’s 9.6 percent, according to IDC.
