Taobao launches home appliance and digital products promotion
TAOBAO Mall said today it will spend 200 million yuan (US$31.7 million) to subsidize manufacturers of home appliances and digital products so that they can pass on the savings to customers.
The promotion will last four months.
Taobao's business to consumer website said sales in the first quarter reached 8 billion yuan and estimated the figure to nearly double to 15 billion yuan in the second quarter.
The sales promotion will cover most major brands of electronics and home appliances.
Home appliance retailers like Gome and Suning have launched similar campaigns to boost sales in the past few months.
Home appliance sales, especially those of air conditioners and electric heaters, dropped in the first quarter after the old-for-new subsidy program ended in December.
Taobao Mall is China's largest B2C site with 53 percent market of the Chinese mainland market as of the end of 2011, according to Internet consultancy iResearch Inc.
