Top smartphone vendor in Chinese market
THE surging demand for large screen mobile phones and trend for LTE has propelled Apple to become the top smartphone vendor by units sold in the Chinese market for the first time in the fourth quarter, US-based research firm Canalys said yesterday.
Apple achieved this position even as the average iPhone price is double the average price of other handsets in the market, Canalys added.
Apple’s China revenue hit US$16.1 billion in the first fiscal quarter ended on December 27, a 70-percent growth year on year, which made the country the company’s fastest growing region globally, Apple said yesterday, amid surging demand for its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
“The company is finally riding the large screen and LTE trends in China, which have been vital to its success,” said Canalys in a report.
Apple sold its 1 billionth iOS device (including iPhone, iPad and iPod) in November globally — a 64-gigabyte iPhone 6 Plus, said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, yesterday.
The top four vendors in the fourth quarter in China by units were Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung and Huawei, said Canalys, which is said to release a report with figures next week.
