Housing transactions soar 22.9%

NEW home transactions exceeded 200,000 square meters in Shanghai last week while the average price climbed to a three-week high amid strong sales of mid to high-end properties, data showed yesterday.

Purchases of new residential properties, excluding government-subsidized affordable housing, jumped 22.9 percent from a week earlier to 214,000 square meters during the seven days ended on Sunday, Shanghai Deovolente Realty Co said.

"New home sales rebounded after hovering around 170,000 square meters for two straight weeks," said Lu Qilin, a Deovolente researcher. "The average price remained above 23,000 yuan (US$3,633) a square meter for the eighth straight week. Forty percent of all transactions were for homes costing at least 25,000 yuan a square meter."

The new homes cost an average 25,264 yuan per square meter, up 5.4 percent on a weekly basis, Deovolente said.
