New home may tempt buyers, but sales slow
SHANGHAI residents are eager to ask about housing prices, even dashing to take a free shuttle bus to see their future dream homes. But would-be buyers remain in a wait-and-see posture on making purchases, as shown by a four-day property exhibition that opened yesterday in the city.
The exhibition at the Shanghai Exhibition Center presented projects from about 200 real estate developers, including big-name players like Poly Real Estate, Greenland Group and Vanke.
It has attracted thousands of potential home buyers, including mothers-to-be, newlyweds and families made up of two generations. They took advantage of the eight-day holiday break to visit newly built development projects offered during the show and test the waters on developer discounts.
It appeared that no big bargains were available on the first day of the show. Consumers, while happy to visit new homes, kept their pocketbooks shut tight even though the exhibition site was crowded with people.
October is usually dubbed the housing silver season and September the golden season because of a sales boom during the two months. However, with housing purchase limits and other curbs in place, potential home buyers are cautious.
The show attracted about 30,000 visitors yesterday even though the show included about a fifth fewer developers than a similar exhibition had in May, according to soho.com.
