City growing greener as rivers get cleaner

As Jiading continues its ecological corridor construction, newly-added green land coverage will surpass 10,000 mu (666.7 hectares) and forest coverage rate will rise by over one percent by the end of 2019, according to the district’s environmental protection authority.

By then, city-level key ecological corridors will appear at the surroundings of the Renewable Energy Center, along the Wusong River and at both sides of Shenhai, Jinghu and Raocheng highways.

While more city spaces are turning green, the district’s river courses are turning cleaner. Since 2016 Jiading has achieved comprehensive river channel regulations over 254 rivers spanning 343 kilometers. Through dredging and improving river bank afforestation, the district has improved both the hydro-power and the regional water quality of the river courses tremendously.

Last year, the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus measured in a water environment assessment decreased by 31.1 and 11.8 percent respectively compared with 2016. The proportion of Grade V water was reduced by 59.7 percent.

From 2015 to 2018, Jiading spent 33.06 billion yuan (US$4.8 billion) in environmental protection, equivalent to 4.1 percent of the district’s GDP in the same period. Last year, PM2.5 density fell from 63 micrograms per cubic meter in 2015 to 40 micrograms per cubic meter. There were 284 days with good air quality, accounting for 78 percent of all days and 11.7 percentage points higher than in 2015.

Earlier this month, the second municipal environmental protection inspection team issued a report on Jiading’s environment protection work after an inspection in April.

The team made its inspection by listening to work reports, examining relevant documents, conducting discussions and asking questions, considering tip-offs and making on-site inspections.

It noted that in recent years, with rapid economic development and the introduction of many people from outside the district, a number of environmental issues had become increasingly prominent.

This month, the municipal team is conducting the second round of inspection in Jiading to ensure that the improvement is being made.
