Doctor donates his own stem cells

Zhu Jinxiao, a general practitioner at community healthcare center in the Jiading Industrial Zone, donated stem cells at Huashan Hospital earlier this month.
The recipient of his stem cells will be a leukemia patient who lives in the neighboring Zhejiang Province.
Zhu, 27, registered with the China Marrow Donor Program in 2013 and became the 23rd donor of stem cells in Jiading and the 59th in Shanghai. There are 5,624 registered donors of stem cells in the program in Jiading District.
Among Zhu’s visitors while he was in hospital was a 75-year-old patient surnamed Zhao. “Zhu is a great young man,” Zhao said, adding that Zhu had been very patient and careful when Zhao was there to Zhu’s clinic for treatment.
“I waited for six years to donate my stem cells to save a man and a family,” Zhu said. “If I can relieve their pain and save their lives, it will be my mission as a doctor, and also my pride as a volunteer.”
In four hours, 200 milliliters of stem cells were collected and given to a girl with leukemia by a doctor from Zhejiang.
