Folding animals into quilts and towels
Pan Xuedong, a senior staff member at an RT-Mart in Minhang, has gone viral with the “animals” he creates with quilts in the supermarket.
Pan doesn’t just use quilts for his artwork; he also uses bed sheets and towels on which he knits the images of elephants, bears and swans, among other animals.
When he was a soldier for five years, Pan was commended for his impeccable quilt folding skills required in the army.
“I would never have imagined that one day it would become my profession,” he said.
In 2006, Pan began working at the textile product unit at the supermarket after retiring from the army. “There were no standards to refer to,” he said. “But we had been thinking about ways in which to create impressive quilts with a memorable design.”
“Have a look at this monkey made of a brown towel,” he said. “It took me about 15 minutes to figure out the design. It’s quite simple and you can make one yourself at home for fun.” He added.
However, not all quilts are easy to create. An elephant pattern is more involved, requiring two thick quilts and a lot of time to knit.
Over the past 15 years, Pan has created over 500 designs. Many call his creations “supermarket art.”
Pan feels proud, but said he just wants customers to enjoy the shopping experience. Pan said that he will continue to develop new animal designs and patterns for shoppers who enjoy his work.
