No fears for rice supply but soybean a problem

Market reserves of Songjiang rice are ample and prices stable, whereas breeding and feed companies in the district are coping with the rising prices of feed soybean meal.

“Songjiang’s food production area covers 150,000 mu (10,000 hectares) and yield remains stable in recent years. The farming activities this year in general haven’t been affected much by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Yu Chunyun, chief of the planting office of the Songjiang agriculture and rural committee.

In Maogang Town, the district’s major food production town, farmers have wasted no time in starting spring plowing.

“The winter was mild, and the green-manure crops are earlier than in former years. So this year’s spring plowing is also carried out ahead of time,” said Liang Rong, deputy chief of Maogang agro-technical station.

Sales of rice have been rising dramatically of late, according to Songlin Rice Co, the district’s leading rice company.

“Our rice sales volume used to be 6 or 7 tons per day, whereas recently it has climbed to about 10 tons,” said Zhang Wen, a manager.

The company says its supplies are enough to last for about six months till the rice harvest in September, according to Zhang.

“The market price of Songlin rice will stay stable in spite of rising demand. The company is increasing the rice-planting area by 10 to 20 percent a year,” Zhang added.

Supplies of major crops such as rice and wheat are expected to be sufficient this year, but the soybean supply this year will be problematic.

Impacted by the shortage will be the district’s pig breeding industry and its upper stream feed industry.

“Soybean meal pressed from soybeans is the major ingredient in pig feed. But its price has risen by 400 yuan (US$56.7) per ton recently. Such a rise is affordable so far, but we are considering raw material alteration to cope with the rising price,” said Wang Longqin, chairman of Songlin Food Co.

Chen Yingjie, a manager at Xinnong Feed Co, a key feed producer in Songjiang, said: “Our daily production of feed requires 30 to 50 tons of soybean meal, and its major suppliers are companies in Nantong in neighboring Jiangsu Province. Recently we are contacting companies in China’s northeast provinces, the major soybean production base in the country.”
