Art Space reveals festival itinerary for carousel of magic, music, dance

THE 21st China Shanghai International Arts Festival has announced performances for its Art Space section.

As one of the core sections of the annual festival, Art Space encourages every district to showcase their own specialties and highlight them for residents. The section also sees high-quality performances in the suburban districts to benefit its people. Art Space is a general name for these performances.

Huangpu District is to stage a series of high-quality music performances, while Changning District is famous for dance performances since it’s where the Shanghai International Dance Center is located.

Yangpu District will continue to highlight a series of “forest classical concerts,” which will be held at Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park.

The forest classical concerts from October 18 to 20 have invited three performing groups: the Rundfunkchor Berlin, soprano Angela Gheorghiu and Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra, as well as conductor Pinchas Zukerman and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

In Huangpu District, citizens will be able to enjoy concerts, dances, drama and magic shows at Shanghai Great World and the outdoor venue of Shanghai City Lawn Music Plaza.

Recommended performances include a concert by the Italian Saxophone Quartet, Croatian cellist Ana Rucner’s crossover recital, an “ice music concert,” presented by Norwegian percussionist Terje Isungset, as well as magic shows by two world-class magicians Carlos Ignacio Zabaletta and Michel Clavello.

In Changning District, well-received dance productions from home and abroad, and master workshops and lectures will be presented during the gala.

On November 3, Yen Han Ballet Co’s production “Creations” will make its world premiere in collaboration with the Shanghai Ballet Co at Shanghai International Dance Center.

Yen Han has been Zurich Ballet’s prima ballerina for 25 years. She founded the Yen Han Ballet Co in Zurich, Switzerland, together with her husband Matthias Zinser.

Choreographers Filipe Portugal and Ken Ossola also took part in the creation of the prestigious production.

On the same day, Wuxi Song and Dance Theater will present a patriotic-themed dance drama “The Soul of Tianshan Mountain.”

Dance masters’ workshops and lectures will feature world-famed performers such as Tan Yuanyuan, prima ballerina of San Francisco Ballet; Xin Lili, head of Shanghai Ballet; Tao Ye, artistic director of the Tao Dance Theater; and independent choreographers Filipe Portugal and Ken Ossola.

Art Space promises to bring at least two domestic or international performances to every suburban district like Minhang, Jinshan, Qingpu, Fengxian and Chongming during the festival from October 18 to November 17.
