Exhibition features video, interactive installations

THE exhibition “Time Field Space,” at Hanshan Art Museum in Suzhou, features nearly 200 photo, video and interactive installations created by 30 artists from both home and abroad.
Stepping into the exhibition hall, visitors will be first attracted to a video titled “The Rat” by French artist Bertrand Gadenne.
Born in 1951, Gadenne lives and works in France. The work uses the exhibition place and the video to present the image of a rat. The objective of the work is to transform the public space into the scene of a strange apparition.
A passerby strolling down the street might have jumped with fear or fascination at the sight of a white rat coming from the dark and it’s growing disproportionately large when entering the window.
The gigantic animal tries to escape into the street, then returns to the back of the store to disappear into the darkness. This implies ambivalent thoughts between humor and repulsion, fascination and phantasmagoria.
Another highlight is “The Death of Marat” by Chinese artist Yi Du.
Born in 1975 in Jiangxi Province, Yi is a member of the Royal Photographic Society and a photography lecturer for Nikon Photo (China).
The picture is a tribute to, as well as a playful mimic of, the classic 1793 painting by Jacques-Louis David of the murdered French revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat, lying dead in his bath.
“The Death of Marat” is one of the most famous images of the French Revolution. David was a leading painter, a Montagnard and a member of the revolutionary Committee of General Security. Painted in the months after Marat’s murder, it has been described as the first modernist painting, for taking “the stuff of politics as its material, and did not transmute it.”
