Shanghai Super Classic, a vintage car lovers’ treat

AUTOMOBILE lovers in the city have a rare opportunity to see over 30 vintage cars from all over the world at the 2019 Shanghai Super Classic, held from May 15 to June 16, at the North Bund’s Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal.

It is the first ever international automobile culture and art exhibition in Asia. The exhibited cars, valued at more than US$30 million in total, offer a retrospective review on the development of the automobile industry. Visitors will discover how the shape and functions of cars have evolved over time and the fashion, technology and lifestyle influences on the motor industry.

An array of automobiles will be put on display, from 100-year-old antiques, pre-war and post-war classics, New China period cars to limited editions and Formula One racers, as well as contemporary classic models, and cutting-edge concept cars representing a tantalizing glimpse of the future.

Among the cars featured are the luxury Cadillac Fleetwood in the 1955 Elvis Presley collection, the Aston Martin DB5, which appeared in several James Bond movies, the classic modern super-sports LaFerrari, the Lincoln Model K Sport, as well as the award-winning Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Mercedes-Benz 380K and the homegrown Hongqi CA72, the “Oscar” of the automobile industry — Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

All the exhibited cars are provided by automotive museums and private collections from around the world.

Organizers of the event said that automobile culture’s long history first originated in Europe and the United States. Even today, the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a sacred place for car worshippers the world over, while Britain’s Goodwood Revival is a celebrated carnival of cars attended by young and old in period costumes. But with the SSC Gala, Shanghai will take its place among those revered automotive events.

The theme of the inaugural SSC is Shanghai Elegance & Classic Legacy. In addition to the display of automobiles, live cultural performances, parties and forums with different weekly themes will also be hosted.

Celebrated artist Li Zili, a recipient of the UNESCO Lifelong Achievement Award for Art, also created a painting “Magic Capital Vera” for the event. The painting will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to help autistic children.
