TeamLab Borderless: a space in constant flux

NESTLING beside the Power Station of Art, teamLab Borderless Shanghai reopened on Friday following two months of closure amid the coronavirus epidemic.

Featuring a collection of 50 teamLab original artworks and interactive installations, teamLab Borderless is a world of art without boundaries and a museum without a map.

Once you step into the museum, visitors seem to embark on an art journey that radiates and shines in the darkness.

Artworks move out of frames, communicate with other works, influence and sometimes intermingle with each other with no boundaries.

Hundreds of high-definition projectors create various worlds of forest, flowers, streams and time and space inside. It is actually a borderless “micro-cosmoses” fused with light, sound and art.

The museum renders a totally different visual experience to visitors, trying to “wrap” them all into a digital world inspired by nature and humans.

Digital technology has allowed art to liberate itself from the physical and transcendal boundaries. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous borderless continuity of life.

For example, the “Memory of Topography” depicts a rural mountain landscape of varying elevations. The scenery instills in viewers a feeling of eternal permanence, however, with the flow of real time, the scenery is continuously changing. In spring, the rice fields are small and lush. In summer, they begin to mature, and in the fall, they turn into golden colors. Under the flow of time, the insects and flowers that make an appearance also change. The movement of insects is influenced by the movement and actions of the visitors. When they move around, the flow of air changes and blows the rice plants or scatters flower petals in different directions.

So, mind your steps while visiting. The scene in each room is not fixed, it might change in different time durations. Sometimes the characters or patterns on the wall might have an interactive activity. Make sure you reserve the time and date after you buy the tickets.
