Best of Western masterpieces

PROBABLY one of the best exhibitions to be held this year, the “500 Years of Western Paintings, Collection of Tokyo Fuji Art Museum” is ongoing at Shanghai Powerlong Museum in Qibao, Minhang District, and run through April-end.

A cluster of heavyweight names including Van Gogh, Rubens and Morandi, will definitely thrill the hearts of local art lovers.

As the name suggests, the exhibition features works from the Renaissance era to the 20th century, from Cranach to Andy Warhol, taking in Goya, Van Gogh and Monet along the way. All the 60 artworks are from the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum collection.

Taking “time” as the main narrative, the exhibition captures the development of Western art in last 500 years — from the 16th century to the 20th — allowing visitors to explore the mysteries of the great times, the artists and their works.

The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum was founded by Daisaku Ikeda, a Buddhist philosopher, poet and photographer, in 1983. The museum’s collection comprises of some 30,000 Japanese, Eastern and Western artworks, ranging from paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics and lacquer ware to armor, swords and medallions of various periods and cultures. Among them, the collection of Western oil paintings spanning 500 years is the most outstanding as well as its collection of photographic masterpieces.
