Captain Marvel flight lands in city’s cinemas

THE highly-anticipated American superhero film “Captain Marvel” hits Chinese cinema screens tomorrow.

The film, about Marvel Comics’ character Carol Danvers, held a special screening in Shanghai yesterday. Starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson, it is Marvel’s first superhero movie that takes a female as its main protagonist. Set to a mid-1990s backdrop, the plot reveals how Danvers becomes Captain Marvel as Earth tries to untangle itself from a galactic war between two alien species.

Spectacular chase and space war scenes are featured in the film and several movie buffs believe it blends the best of “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”

American actress and filmmaker Larson received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her impressive depiction of a victim kidnapped in the 2015 film “Room.” The role also won her a Golden Globe. Before shooting, Larson prepared for the role by undergoing a tough physical training schedule that included boxing, judo and wrestling. She also visited an air force base and talked with pilots to make her character more realistic. The film’s star-studded cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Lee Pace and Jude Law.

The film will also be available in an IMAX 3D version at the country’s 600 or so IMAX theaters.
