Children to benefit from early exposure to art at SHCAT

A NUMBER of children’s programs will be staged at Shanghai Children’s Art Theater (SHCAT) this year, with an aim to introduce early art and theater education to children.
SHCAT recently announced its new season of 34 programs, which include both local and overseas productions. All of them will be graded according to the age of their target audiences.
The theater has kept the major art categories of 2018 in the new season, such as music, drama, dance, diversity (physical theater and installation theater). The interactions before, during and after the show help the audiences, especially children, to enjoy the atmosphere as soon as they enter the theater.
Spanish musician Xavi Lozano and his team will play sophisticated melodies, jazz and original compositions with strange instruments like a brick, a crutch, a ladder, a watering can, a bike or an olive, when they stage their unique concert — World Music with Extra-Ordinary Instrument — in March.
Twelve string musicians from Spain’s Orquestra de Cambra de I’Emporda will present a theatrical concert — a combination of classical music and mime. They will welcome audience participation with a soundtrack consisting of well-known pieces from composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, in October.
About 15 plays will be staged — a major part of the SHCAT season in 2019.
Apart from the previous well-received plays like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” and “Chibi Maruko-chan — Cinderella’s Musical,” the theater will present a series of new works like multimedia children’s play “Titanic” by the China Welfare Institute Children’s Art Academy in June and creative puppet theater “Laika” by Xirriquiteula Theater from Spain in July.
“Laika” is inspired by the first astronaut dog in space sent by the Soviet Union in 1957. In the story, the puppy named Laika becomes one of the stars.
Four immersive plays, tailored for children between 6-14 years of age with special needs, will be the highlight this year. Bamboozle Theater Company from the UK will bring their immersive theater “Gentle Giant,” “Storm” and “Moon Song” in April. A localized Chinese version of Bamboozle Theater’s “Down to Earth” will be presented by Shanghai Children’s Art Theater as well.
“Theater, which is different than hospital and mental institutions, is able to inspire and bring happiness to children. This art therapy is irreplaceable. That is the unique charm of theater,” said Liang Xiaoxia, general manager of SHCAT.
