Plenty to see and do this Christmas

MANY entertainment and cultural events will take place around the city this Christmas, a time for sharing, giving and loving.

Shanghai's fashion hub Xintiandi presents a series of holiday programs and musical parades.

On weekends through December 24, the Nutcracker soldiers will parade in Xintiandi and Xintiandi Style. The soldiers will pose for photos with visitors. The Sugarplum Fairy will also be wandering about to add to the festive atmosphere.

On the afternoon of this Saturday, local ballet artists will perform classic dance excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Ballet" at Xintiandi Style. Many surprises will be offered to kids at the mall's Gift House.

"Frozen City," a new piece by avant-garde artist Qiao Cheng, is another highlight of the season at Xintiandi Style. It shows a scene of Christmas in the future.

From December 10 to 25, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium will launch a special "My Green" program to protect sea turtles. The average age for the 10 sea turtles exhibited at the aquarium is more than 60 years old.

With the help of photos and short documentary videos, children will learn about the eating, living and nesting habits of different species of sea turtles.

Visitors will also learn how illegal hunting and trade and the degradation of the marine environment due to human activities have threatened the population of sea turtles and other marine creatures.

The prestigious Lotus Awards, a top honor for domestic dance dramas, will also host an exhibition of its nominated performances.

Artists from all over the country will present acclaimed dances such as "The Three Families Alley" and "Stage Sisters." This year only six dance productions have been chosen from 29 candidates for the final. The awards ceremony will be held on Christmas Eve at Shanghai Art Theater.

Daning Life Hub has invited female artist B.wing to design scenes, decorative ornaments and gifts for Christmas. A cute Christmas rabbit is the highlight of her Christmas artwork. Christmas Eve Concert and New Year Countdown Concert will also delight you.

Visitors can enter the "lighting maze" Jinqiao Life Hub. Interesting Christmas games, a Christmas tree and fabulous visual and audio effects can be found in the maze. Christmas themed paper-cutting workshops will be presented to children.

Christmas is also a good time for movies. Cinemagoers will be offered an array of films around Christmas including "Jump Ashin!," a story about loss, redemption and coming-of-age. Zhang Yimou's historical epic "The Flowers of War," Tsui Hark's 3D martial arts film "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate" and the romance movie "The Tears" will all be on local screens.

Stellar Cinema City and Yonghua Cinema will provide Christmas ticket discounts, special film packages and film spin-off gifts during the holiday.
