Mandarin Oriental boasts unique qualities

AT a time when almost every hotel is thirsting for a larger slice of the MICE market (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), few would disagree that the ability to offer a distinctive and memorable experience could be a key to luring customers.

And few hotels can offer as much as Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, which has been a standout in the city’s highly competitive MICE landscape due to a set of unique selling propositions that its rivals cannot match.

“MICE is important for any hotel because that creates your base of business,” Pierre Barthes, who has taken the helm of the 362-room luxury hotel since February 2012, told Shanghai Daily. “For us, MICE is all about the lifestyle destination.”

A contemporary masterpiece ideally situated on the bank of the Huangpu River within walking distance of the Lujiazui business district, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, has been building its reputation since its opening in April 2013 as one of the ultimate choices in the city for prestigious meetings, exclusive parties and events and stylish weddings with its resort-like setting in a city-center location.

Occupying a dedicated events floor, the hotel’s 1,928 square meters of state-of-the-art meetings and events venues offer a selection of multifunctional event space that includes a 625-square-meter pillar-free Grand Ballroom with a capacity to host 500 guests, a 325-square-meter Oriental Ballroom for 250 guests plus eight versatile meeting rooms equipped with high-speed Internet, wireless AV control panels and built-in LED screens.

And the hotel’s exclusive access to a 5,000-square-meter outdoor event space provides an additional destination element. Ideal for glamorous social events, cocktail receptions, brand launches and fashion shows set against a quintessential Shanghai backdrop, the riverside venue is particularly appealing to savvy event planners seeking distinctive and memorable experiences.

Other highlights for discerning event organizers at Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, include the city’s largest and most luxurious presidential suite and luxury cruise options via its connected marina.

Spanning 788 square meters and featuring 4.8-meter-high ceilings and 360-degree city views from the penthouse floor, the presidential suite is an in-demand setting for cocktail parties, product launches, private trunk shows and exclusive events for up to 50 guests. It also boasts two sky garden terraces, a private bar and kitchen, plus a 65-inch Bang & Olufsen TV and sound system.

Also unique to the property is the new Shanghai Metropolitan Marine Yacht Club at the hotel’s doorstep. Exciting private cruising options are available for high-end clientele under a partnership agreement. For incentive groups, the hotel is selling its specialty suites that actually include a complimentary sunset cruise on a private yacht on the famed Huangpu River.

There’s more to impress the guests. Being the first luxury hotel in the city to provide outdoor seating for al fresco dining at all of its six superb and world-class food and beverage venues, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, boasts two signature cutting-edge restaurants. They are led by Richard Ekkebus of the Michelin two-star Amber at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, and Shanghainese celebrity chef Tony Lu.

Moreover, the adjacent 210-room Mandarin Oriental Executive Apartments, Shanghai’s first international luxury-branded executive apartments, provides ideal choices for guests looking for extended stays.

“Operating in such a highly competitive landscape, our hotel is fortunate to have a set of unique selling propositions that provide key points of differentiation,” said Barthes, a Marseilles native and 16-year veteran with Mandarin Oriental. “As well, let’s not forget our legendary hospitality. It is our award-winning colleagues, however, that make the real difference.”
