A model’s dedication to beauty and to life

HAVING worked in the fashion industry since school, Wang Yihan’s daily dress code is surprisingly casual — T-shirt, jeans and a pair of white tennis shoes. With her hair in a ponytail, she defines “comfortable” as an important part of fashion.

“When you feel yourself relaxed and confident, you will show your maximum charms,” she told Shanghai Daily.

The four-time Miss China has plenty of experience of competing in beauty pageants, including 2014 Top Model of the World, Asian Beauty Queen, 2014 China Qipao World Competition, 2013 Miss United Continent, 2013 Miss Richy International of Hainan, 2012 Super Car Show Racing Queen and 2011 First Runner-up of Miss World of China.

Since a freshman at university, Wang has established her own career in organizing digital idol competitions and successfully ran “Next Queen,” a digital idol competition in 2016.

Wang is now a visiting professor at the Shanghai Theater Academy while at the same time being involved in local model training and organizing beauty pageants by collaborating with educational institutes across Asia and Europe.

Wang seems to be super busy, but she says her work is “a source of pleasure.”

She is now focusing on establishing a model school in the United States.

Wang says the culture in the US has a more comprehensive background and her school there will be adapted to local people’s aesthetic standards.

“It is my career, also a dream of beauty, a dream to create a platform for young people pursuing their dream of beauty,” she said.

“Beauty pageants are a platform that provides those excellent females who are beautiful, healthy, talented and full compassion to extend peace, friendship and love to others,” Wang said.

Wang has other talents besides fashion and beauty pageants.

Born into a traditional Chinese family — her mother is a traditional Chinese medicine doctor and her father a soldier — Wang started playing piano, drums and flute, and learned dancing, calligraphy and drawing, at the age of 4.

“My memory of childhood is rushing to various art classes and competitions instead of leisure or traveling like other children,” she recalled.

That childhood led Wang to become talented in many musical instruments and Chinese traditional arts become her hobby.

“Playing music, Chinese calligraphy and paintings are now a way to relax for me,” she said.

Her calligraphy was exhibited in Paris in 2015 in an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.

“An ideal life should be full of passion,” Wang said. “Passionate on your own career and family, keeping it and managing your life with great vividness.”

Q: Can you predict the new fashion trends in 2019?

A: The 2019 trends will feature checkered, tie-dye, florals and satin. In the Internet era, the Chinese local keeps the same pace with international fashion. Finding your own style is the most important thing in fashion.

Q: What’s your definition of beauty?

A: It’s a big question and really hard to answer clearly. To me, beauty is both objective and subjective. For example, we have a nice talk, relaxing and interesting, I found it professional and arousing sympathy — this is a status of beautiful.

People desire beauty and showing their beauty — that’s why those beauty pageants are so eye-catching. With different themes, international beauty pageants encourage the independence of females, and boost the peace of the world.

If I really have to give a specific definition of beauty, I would like to say “Beauty is what makes the life better and what makes the world better.”

Q: Compared with international beauty pageants, what do you think of the system in China?

A: The environment and system of a beauty pageant have its generality both internationally and in China, the difference is the culture — a good performance of a model or a participant in a beauty pageant is deeply influenced by the knowledge and background of the performer, from music, dance, design to art sense.

Super international models and beauty pageant participants are more educated with those trainings, compared with most Chinese local models.

On the other hand, everyone has his or her own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages — this is also where the beauty comes from.
