Annual political sessions in Shanghai to discuss key tasks

The Fifth Plenary Session of the 13th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee opened yesterday.

The opening ceremony was held at the World Expo Center.

The session will conclude on Saturday. Members of the CPPCC will meet over the next four days to discuss local issues and make recommendations.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Dong Yunhu, chairman of the CPPCC Shanghai Committee, provided an overview of the major tasks completed by the Standing Committee of the 13th CPPCC Shanghai Committee last year, as well as the new tasks to be completed in the coming year.

One of the highlights of last year’s tasks was the construction of the five “new cities” in Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian and Nanhui.

In his address to the delegates, Dong stated that “we conducted joint investigations and research with relevant CPPCC district committees on key issues and put forward suggestions and proposals with significant reference value.”

“The major tasks were Jiading New City’s mission to build the core area of a world-class automotive industry center; Qingpu New City’s aim to build an important area for the Yangtze River Delta digital trunk line; Songjiang New City’s goal to build a high-end industrial cluster; Fengxian New City’s drive to bolster the beauty and health industry; and Nanhui New City’s efforts to form a convenient and efficient integrated transportation system,” he said.

In total, Dong says, they organized more than 30 consecutive events, including briefings, investigation and research seminars, and special-subject investigations, all of which were aimed at “promoting the construction of the five ‘new cities’ and striving to optimize the spatial pattern of the city.”

By 9am on Tuesday morning, 286 proposals from political advisers had been submitted to the committee. Among them, 108 are related to economic activity. Social construction was the second-most popular topic with 103 submissions, 32 of which were related to ecological activity, 23 political and 20 cultural activities.
