12 years’ jail for ex-airport official

Wu Jianrong, former deputy Party secretary and chairman of the Shanghai Airport Authority, was sentenced to 12 years in jail for taking bribes and concealing overseas bank deposits, along with confiscation of 2 million yuan (US$285,751) of his property, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court heard yesterday.

According to the court, between 2006 and 2017, Wu took advantage of his position as deputy secretary of the CPC Shanghai financial work commission, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai government and deputy Party secretary and chairman of the Shanghai Airport Authority, to seek benefits for others, and accepted bribes totalling 20 million yuan.

In March 2017, Wu, who served as deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai government, didn’t report his wife’s deposit of HK$3 million (US$390,000), kept in a Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp account, when he was asked to declare his personal assets.

By surrendering himself and retuning the illicit gains, Wu earned a lenient penalty.

The city’s discipline inspection commission and supervision commission announced yesterday that last year Shanghai punished nearly 1,000 people who were involved in 466 cases related to violations of the eight-point frugality code of the CPC Central Committee.

Last year the two commissions organized three series of inspection tours at 25 universities and 42 state-owned enterprises under the management of the city government, and found 1,247 problems.

They also made suggestions to those being inspected and related government authorities while drafting 22 reports and transferring 142 items of evidence, they said.
