26 gambling extortion gangsters jailed
Twenty-six members of three extortion gangs were sentenced to up to one year and nine months in jail by a court for extorting money from 15 unlicensed gambling venues, prosecutors in Hongkou District said.
According to the Hongkou District People’s Procuratorate, police in the district found some pointers to the existence of the three gangs when officers were investigating a fight in an arcade in June last year.
Officers soon identified the three gang leaders Zhao, Ma and Guo and arrested their gang members, who were all charged with extortion in July.
Investigation showed that Zhao, Ma and Guo led members of their gangs to extort money from arcades, which were also gambling venues, by threatening to report them to police.
The gangs often asked people to check if the arcade provided such services and then had its members pretend to be gamblers and wager at these sites. Those who won in the games left while the losers stayed behind to ask for their money back, or threatened to report the venue to police.
Between March and May last year, they committed such acts at 15 game rooms. The jail terms given to the 26 people ranged from seven months to one year and nine months.
