Shanghai No. 7 People’s Hospital, Zhoupu Hospital and the People’s Hospital of the Pudong New Area have reported an increase of 15 percent in cases of people being hurt by cats and dogs compared with last month. Shanghai Punan Hospital receives 300 to 350 patients bitten by pets every day, up 25 percent from last month, and many of them are dog owners. “We’ve treated a 73-year-old man who was bitten on his leg by his neighbor’s dog that was not tethered when he was having a walk in the neighborhood. Also, there was a 6-year-old boy who was bitten on his face by a stray,” said doctor Jiang Zhaohua. “Also, a 20-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because half of her lips were bitten and split by her pet dog when she tried to kiss it.” Jiang said in summer days pets are easily agitated and hurt people. Rabies is fatal, and people who are bitten must go to hospital immediately to receive treatment, he warned.
