Crackdown on irregularities as CIIE nears

SHANGHAI’S urban management and law enforcement authorities conducted a drill yesterday in preparation for the upcoming second China International Import Expo.

Urban management and law enforcement officials from the Yangtze River Delta region also participated in the activity under a joint coordination mechanism which enables information sharing and joint investigations. The mechanism also helps law enforcement crack down on irregularities regarding garbage transport and treatment, illegal street vendors and distribution of advertisements.

During the expo, there will be more than 3,500 240-liter bins for waste sorting at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, Shanghai Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau said.

Bilingual guides

Volunteers will give guidance on waste sorting inside the venue, bins for wet and dry trash will be installed at each booth and there will be bins for wet, dry, hazardous and recyclable garbage in corridors. Bilingual garbage-sorting guides and signs are being posted.

During the first CIIE, more than 200 tons of waste was produced, or about the volume of 12 trucks a day.

A total of 4,235 irregularities related to illegal street vendors, illegal structures and signboards and illegal outdoor advertisements were identified by urban management and law enforcement authorities in a CIIE-related sweep.

Most issues have been rectified and the rest will be resolved before the end of October, according to the bureau.

More than 19.74 million square meters of illegal structures have been dismantled across the city this year, involving 9,917 cases, the bureau said.

A total of 11,835 food-related cases involving illegal night-time food vendors, barbecue stalls and breakfast stalls were busted as well, with 4,032 kilograms of food confiscated.

The urban management and law enforcement authorities also tackled 1,678 cases of greenery damage.

In addition, more than 10,000 cases involving illegal treatment of construction waste and 63 cases of burning garbage were busted citywide.

Inspections have been beefed up in areas near the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Qingpu District where the expo will be held, bureau director Xu Zhihu said.

Urban management and law enforcement authorities in Qingpu have conducted six rounds of campaigns targeting illegal street vendors, construction waste transportation, and illegal signboards to improve the district’s landscape and environment.

“The city’s urban management and law enforcement inspections will center on five key areas, including around the National Exhibition and Convention Center and the Hongqiao business hub,” said Xu.

Surveillance cameras and patrols will be used to spot irregularities as soon as possible, he said.
