A DRIVER has been detained for taking 33 people in a vehicle designed to carry only five, police said yesterday.

The vehicle was stopped by police in Songjiang District at the intersection of Songhui Road W. and Chenta Road on the morning of June 10.

Police said the vehicle was moving unusually slowly and its suspension appeared to be under a heavy weight.

Passengers inside could be seen pressed against the windows like canned sardines.

The driver, surnamed Zhu, said he was taking a group of workers from Chedun Town to a factory on Songzheng Highway.

Zhu said he was aware of his position but said he did it “for convenience,” police said.

Zhu faces a charge of dangerous driving and, if convicted, could be jailed for six months.
