Engineers to perform ‘bypass’ on roundabout

Demolition work on two ramps of the busy Tianmu Road Roundabout will start on Friday.

The two exit ramps connect the North-South Elevated Road with Meiyuan and Wuzhen roads.

They will be replaced by new ramps to join the north-south thoroughfare with the Beiheng Passage, a 19-kilometer-long east-west road linking Changning, Putuo, Jing’an, Huangpu, Hongkou and Yangpu districts.

The work on the Tianmu Road Roundabout is scheduled to be completed by June 2021, when the western part of the Beiheng Passage will initially open, according to the Shanghai SMI Highway Group.

The elevated road will be busier during the renovation because traffic will be unable to exit, so drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.

Some designated lanes for public buses in the area will open to other vehicles during the project.

The roundabout was built in 1993 along with the North-South Elevated Road and has become a traffic bottleneck.

The city’s traffic authority installed traffic lights on the roundabout in 2007 to try to relieve the congestion, but it has hardly improved the situation.

The renovation on the roundabout aims to not only connect the North-South Elevated Road with the Beiheng Passage, but also to solve the congestion on the roundabout, said Yang Guangqiang, a senior engineer with the group.

He described the project as a “bypass heart surgery.”

“The renovation plan has been reviewed and improved repeatedly to reduce the inconvenience to commuters and residents,” Yang said. Engineers had planned to demolish the entire roundabout.

Under the current plan, the Beiheng Passage will run over the elevated road, while the roundabout will become a key intersection connecting the two major roads.

The Wuzhen Road ramp that links to the ground will be renovated to go up to the passage.

The Meiyuan Road ramp will be divided into two parts to both connect traffic to the Shanghai Railway Station and the passage.

It will allow more commuters to enter the station from the north plaza. Currently, more than 60 percent of passengers enter the station through the south plaza because of better access.

Other new ramps and roads will be built to better connect the elevated road and passage as well as improve traffic in the downtown area.

Prefabricated structures and Building Information Modeling will be widely used during the project to reduce the impact on the environment and nearby residents.

The North-South Elevated Road and the Beiheng Passage are part of the city government’s plan to built three east-west and three north-south thoroughfares across the city to improve traffic flow.
