Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel?

A bus driver has been suspended from work for a month for using his smartphone while driving, according to Fengxian District police.

Driver Gu on the Xinhai line was recorded by a passenger watching TV dramas and using WeChat while driving on December 7. The video showed him raise his hands from the steering wheel more than once to play with his phone.

The Xinhai line shuttles between Xinzhuang in Minhang and Fengxian bay tourism area. There are over 50 stops and the passenger flow is often quite big. The bus company said the driver would be fined and if such a case happens again, they would not renew his contract next year.

On December 8, Fengxian traffic police summoned Gu to the police station and fined him 200 yuan (US$29) for viewing electronic devices while driving and impairing safety. Two points were deducted from his driver’s licence.

Traffic police have ordered the bus company to start an inspection to rule out the possibility of similar cases.

Gu has now been suspended by the bus company for a month and could still face a further 5,000 yuan penalty.
