Fresh beef has food retailer in the soup

Hema Fresh already embroiled in two separate scandals has drawn the ire of a customer for the third time in a month.

Customer Liu claimed the color of a pack of seaweed branded Heyu she bought on the Hema Fresh app faded when she dipped it in clean water.

“The water turned reddish orange,” she complained to Xinmin Evening News.

She said after she washed the seaweed several times in clean water, the water was still discolored. She said she had bought the same seaweed often on the app, and it was the first time the color had faded.

Liu complained to Hema Fresh, and a member of staff offered 300 yuan (US$44) in compensation at first. But the next day the company refused to pay up, saying its test report showed the product was up to standard, but failed to show the actual report.

Hema Fresh denied any allegation of wrongdoing, saying phycoerythrin, a natural red pigment in seaweed, led to the color fade.

A third-party test report could not be sent to reporters, the company said, for commercial reasons.

Yan Xinghong of Shanghai Ocean University said the complex usually leaks out when the seaweed becomes damp and goes bad.

“Fresh seaweed will not react in such a way. Packaging and improper storage may be the cause,” he said.
