It’s better to wake up than to burn up
A man who set fire to a bed to wake up his son has been sentenced to two and half years behind bars with a three-year reprieve by Qingpu District People’s Court.
At 7pm on April 26, Mao saw his son still asleep. Both were supposed to start work at 6am, so Mao tried to wake his son by shouting at him, but his son snored on. Mao became angry, found a spade, threatened to hit his son with it and cursed loudly. His son remained in dreamland.
Exasperated, Mao poured diesel oil on his son’s bed and set it alight.
His son jumped straight out of bed, but the fire quickly ran out of control and engulfed the whole house.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and put out the blaze, but not before furniture and domestic appliances had been destroyed. Luckily, no one was injured.
As Mao’s family had compensated the landlord, he was granted a reprieve.
