It’s such a relief when toilets get the smarts

The city has built or renovated 150 smart toilets, and an information platform for intelligent toilets will be created in 2019, the city’s sanitation authorities said yesterday, World Toilet Day.

The toilets have liquid crystal screens displaying whether a cubicle is in use or not. Air quality, number of users and temperatures are all shown on the screens.

There is a unisex toilet designed for parents with children and disabled people. A smart sensor regulates hot water taps. They have mobile phone charges, free toilet paper and air conditioning.

If a person does not come out of a cubicle within 15 minutes, an alarm is triggered, allowing cleaners to keep any abnormal situations under control.

The toilets are located in Yangpu, Putuo, Jing’an, Huangpu, and Songjiang districts, said Fu Liping, an official with the sanitation bureau.

An information platform covering all intelligent public toilets will analyze the number of users to help design of future toilets. The platform will allow the public to comment on their experiences, she said.

“The platform will keep track of staff performance and evaluate their work,” said Fu.

“It will also help in planning and analysis for upgrade of public toilets through big data analysis.”

An app will assist residents in finding the nearest smart public toilet.

“We will know how satisfied users are with each toilet via the app,” she said.

Shanghai has more than 2,000 public toilets.
