Local graduates choose science, technology jobs

This year’s graduates from local colleges started their careers in Shanghai on an average salary of 6,024 yuan (US$870) per month, up 11.8 percent from last year, according to a survey released yesterday by the city’s human resources and social security authority.

About 114,000 of this year’s 174,000 graduates entered the local labor market. The rest are still in higher education or have left Shanghai. The vast majority, 67.3 percent, were born after 1995. Only four of this year’s 17 graduates born in or after 2000 have started working here.

A tiny fraction, only 0.1 percent, are working in primary industries while 88.6 percent are in the service sector.

The rental and business services attracted 31 percent of graduates, the largest group, followed by science and technology (12.9 percent) and information and software (9 percent). Science and technology increased the most from last year, growing by 1.2 percent.

The service sector is developing fast. In the first three quarters this year, the added value of the sector was 1.65 trillion yuan, accounting for 69.6 percent of city GDP.

Mainland private enterprises are hiring more graduates.

This year, they employed 26.9 percent of the graduates who chose to work, up 3.8 percent from last year. Foreign ventures hired 13.6 percent, 0.7 percent up, while state-owned companies accepted 7.6 percent, a fall of 6.4 percent.

The survey also found that 30.4 percent of the graduates had actually wanted to work in state-owned companies, followed by foreign-invested companies (29.4 percent). About 6.8 percent put starting up a business of their own as their first career choice.

Those with master’s or doctoral degrees earned 8,967 yuan a month, a 12.1 percent increase. Most graduates expect their pay to increase by about 20 percent after a year.
