Museum summer camp

The annual summer camp, organized by the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, kicked off over the weekend, with a variety of activities, from DIY workshop, chemical experiments to field research, on offer during the one-week program.
The 50 junior high school students, selected from more than 700 applicants across the nation, gathered at the museum in the Pudong New Area on Saturday for the opening ceremony of the camp.
Xu Chenyang, mathematics professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, gave students a lecture on the relation between numbers and shapes to start the camp. The students, who stood out from their counterparts due to their creative thinking and scientific understanding, had an animated discussion with Xu.
Through July 20, they will hear lectures from astronomer Wu Xiangping, who will create a picture of our universe; biologist Qiu Zilong on how to explore the cutting-edge genetic medical treatment; geologist Xu Xing, who will talk about the history of dinosaurs; and science educator Zheng Yongchun on which planet is a possible second home for human beings.
Also, they will be guided on how to turn their ideas into products, and their inventions will be displayed when the camp ends. Also, they will learn computer programming, manipulate drones and take a tour of Century Park, also in Pudong, to get to know about insects.
“We have held the camp for three years. Children have a chance to meet with renowned scientists face to face, and get to know how scientists think and explore the world,” said Wang Xiaoming, director of the museum. “They are encouraged to ask why, and it is what we call scientific spirit and what we want our children to have.”
