New page turned on city’s libraries

Adults and children will soon have more reasons to read, as a newly restored library officially opened its doors while construction started on a new children’s library.

The 80-year-old Yangpu District Library officially reopened yesterday with extended hours and more space.

The library at 366 Changhai Road is now open 9am-9pm daily except Friday mornings.

A new section covering nearly 2,000 square meters includes a “humanities study” where writers and artists will be invited to give lectures and meet readers. The building can now serve 800 readers at the same time.

The library was originally part of the Kuomintang government’s plans to bring the city government and major facilities into the area. In the early 1930s, Yangpu was envisioned as a new city center, complete with government buildings, a museum, a stadium, a hospital and TV and radio stations.

However, construction of the library was suspended in 1935 at the start of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Only partially built, it opened in 1936, before closing a year later.

Building work also started yesterday on the new branch of Shanghai Children’s Library in Putuo District.

The design of the new branch is derived from the bridge in French impressionist Claude Monet’s garden — a rainbow connecting the north of Changfeng Park with the south; a bridge between childhood and the future.
