Online food found to be substandard

Seven batches of food products sold on major Chinese e-commerce platforms including and Taobao have been found to be substandard, district market watchdogs said yesterday.

A batch of peanut crunchy candies sold on Taobao and produced by Shanghai Xilaiyuan Food Co failed tests for excessive coliform bacteria.

Three batches of dried pork meat slices sold on Taobao and made by Shanghai Fengmaniu Co had excessive Ponceau 4R, or carmine, a food coloring.

Two batches of donkey meat sold on Shanghai-based and made by a food producer in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, contained toxic cadmium, a known carcinogen.

Recalls have been ordered and investigations are underway.
