Oranges from Italy in the market after deal
China’s first batch of oranges from Italy arrived at a farmer’s market in the Pudong New Area yesterday afternoon.
This follows the signing of a quarantine agreement between the two nations.
According to Shanghai Customs, officers carried out strict checks on container numbers, the quantity and the condition of the 1,248 boxes of Sicilian blood oranges, which were nearly 19 tons in weight.
Officers also took samples of the oranges and sent them to a lab for further tests for pesticide and heavy metal residue.
Nello Alba, chief executive officer of Sicilian citrus supplier Oranfrizer, said it is promoting high-quality Sicilian citrus to the world.
The blood oranges also represent the “Made in Italy” brand.
He hopes there can be more Sicilian citrus exported to China in the future.
China has the well-known blood oranges from southwestern Chongqing City’s Wanzhou area. But the Wanzhou orange season is from January to late March, and the imported Italian oranges will allow people to enjoy the treat for longer.
