Pickpocket picked up by surveillance

A man has been detained by police after it was alleged he stole two mobile phones in downtown shopping malls.

Police in Xuhui District said they received a report on November 22 last year from a woman complaining that her phone had been stolen when she was in a shopping mall on Huaihai Road M.

The woman told police she had put her phone in a pocket of her jacket and had no idea it had been stolen until she noticed it was missing.

Police said they received several reports of similar thefts in shopping malls and suspected they were committed by the same person.

From surveillance cameras inside the malls, police identified a suspect, a man surnamed Liu, and apprehended him inside People’s Square Metro station on January 7.

Police said they found two phones worth about 10,000 yuan (US$1,500) at his home that had been reported stolen.
