Plane with nowhere to go returns to Seattle

A Delta Air Lines flight from Seattle to Shanghai had to turn back on Tuesday due to a problem with the lavatories.

Flight DL589 turned back about three hours after taking off from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport around noon on Tuesday local time, according to the airline.

The replacement aircraft landed at Pudong International Airport at 5:37am yesterday, about 10 hours late.

“We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers. The well-being of our customers and crew is always our top priority,” Delta said in a statement.

The crew informed passengers that the water tanks in three of the four lavatories had malfunctioned and that the flight had to return, passenger Hu Xuejiao told Shanghai Daily.

They waited for about four hours before departing for Shanghai again.

In previous cases, toilet malfunctions have caused flight delays and even diversions.

An Air China’s flight from Shanghai to Beijing was delayed for an hour in October 2012 for toilet repairs. A Delta flight from New York to Nice, France, had to return after three hours due to malfunction of the toilets in August 2018.
